Earth Life!

Hold up. Can we all get off the earth day bandwagon please?

We should not be introspective about how our actions are destroying the planet today. We should be that way EVERYDAY.

We are intelligent beings so why are we destroying the only home we have, as though we can simply up and move to the next home? More so, why are we only REALISING what we are doing for one day of the year, and then not taking any action the rest of the year?

I know nobody is perfect, but every little step taken towards sustainable living counts. If you really want to safeguard the planet Earth, read on, and let’s make a difference together ..

Give dairy free milks a chance!

There are approximately 250 million dairy cows in the world at the moment. The impact of dairy farming on the environment is an unpleasant trifecta of increased greenhouse emissions, deterioration of our water resources, and a decay of the quality of our soil.

“Ten per cent of agriculture’s greenhouse gas emissions are attributed to dairy farming”

Use cloth bags!

Those unassuming plastic bags you buy at supermarkets are one of the Earths hugest enemies. We need to align ourselves against these deathly grocery carriers. 1 plastic bag takes 100 years to decompose, and during that time they release toxins into our soil, rivers and oceans. The production of these bags requires millions of gallons of petroleum and stray bags choke and strangle wildlife.

Each year millions of discarded plastic shopping bags end up as litter in the environment when improperly disposed of”

Eat less meat!

Think about the slice of bacon you had for breakfast today. Before landing up on your plate, it had quite a detrimental effect on the environment. Take into account the land used to rear the pig. Consider the water, fertilizer and grain to sustain the pig until it is ready for slaughter. The pollution associated with that is rather extensive.

“It takes more than 11 times as much fossil fuel to make one calorie from animal protein as it does to make 1 calorie from plant protein”

Be prudent with paper!

The next time you go to your local coffee shop for a soy latte, take along your own drinking cup! If you can email documents, do so, instead of printing them out. And if you must print, recycle J

“Paper production has ranked among the most resource-intensive and highly polluting of all manufacturing industries

You’d be surprised to learn that many of your daily activities, and items that you make use of often, contribute to the decline of our environment. Small steps towards more eco-friendly living can make a big difference and you it won’t affect the quality of your life either.

Sentimental Facebook statuses; photos of beautiful scenery, animals running freely and dolphins gamboling in the open ocean are not going to save our planet. Only you can!
